Here is a recent comment in my blog:
Hi Frugal Disney Mom,
I don't know if you caught my recent comment on your blog but was hoping you might do a post on the ways you sell your home stuff (perhaps going into a little more depth). You seem to be very successful with this and I'd love to have some other options other than Ebay (no camera).
Thanks, Broke and Busted :)
Broke and Busted:
Thank you for reading my blog and leaving a comment or 2. Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. So here is what I do to sell our extra stuff.
A little background first. I started this last year and heard of Craigslist.com. So I went and checked it out. I was also on a yahoo list for something else and someone there mentioned the local sales and barter group. So I signed up there also.
First thing I had to do was find stuff in this house. HA! that was not hard. We are people of stuff....lots of stuff...way to much stuff! My son grows like a weed and I had a ton of clothes to get rid of.
Off the top of my head some things I sold:
B's Columbia Winter Coat
Ipod Shuffle - Aldi's had them cheap. I bought 2 and sold 1 making a profit
Sleds
Cookbooks
B's Clothes
This year I have sold:
George Forman Grill - I got a bigger one
Another Ipod shuffle - won that at work
Purses
Shampoos from the closet.
TV - family of 2 does not need 4 Tvs.
Scooter
Pants
Here are my steps:
1. Find my items. I make sure they are clean and useable.
2. Check ebay to see if they are selling for a high price there. If they are then you need to use Ebay. Get more bang for your buck.
3. List your item on craigs. Describe it as best as you can. Follow this link to an ad I have on Craigslist.
http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/bab/338209896.html (If you are near Milwaukee, WI and in need of a toybox
4. Pick a reasonable price and be willing to go lower if you need to.
5. Then you wait. Sometimes people will email you with an offer. Sometimes I take them if I just want the items out of my house. Sometimes the price is to low and I hold out.
6. Pick your items by season. Right now I have a few things I can't sell - no one wants them. A nice fall coat, toy box, brand new football game. But come fall I am willing to be they go ASAP!
7. I do post pictures with my items. Many people want to see a pictures. One cheaper way I can think of this. Is use regular film if you have a camera or buy a disposable camera. Take pictures of all your items. Then get the filmed developed but just get a CD. At Walgreens (Hi Stan) it would cost you about $5.99 for the camera and $2.99 for the CD. So I would suggest gathering all your items and then photographing them. Some things don't need pictures..but if you feel they do this would be one way.
So someone wants to buy your item:
1. Cash only. I know that should be a given, but people have asked me to take a check.
2. I personally let people come to my house to pick up. I NEVER let them in my house. I meet them at the door with the item. My son who is 6 foot 2 - 220 pounds is always home when I do this.
3. If you don't feel comfortable meeting at your house arrange for another spot.
That is really it. Very easy once you get started.
Check Yahoo for a group.
Sales and Barter is the one I belong to.
Craigslist.com - for some reason I can sell higher price items there better.
Now here is why you check Ebay:
Before I started with the other groups. I did a little Ebay selling but not much. I hate going to the post office so I would be slow at shipping. Not fair to the buyer.
One day I happen to be on the internet looking at Kool-Aid items. An item I had was up for sale. I never used my item and all it did was sit in the cupboard. So I thought well they are getting $40.00 for it. I could use that money now. So I put mine up there. I figured I got it for free and that money would come in handy. It was around Christmas time too. So I put it up with a small starting price. My other internet friends and I watched it. It was at $40.00. I was thrilled. Then it went higher, at one point it was at $60.00. The last day of the auction it was still at $60.00. . My friend and I are IM back and forth. I was happy it would sell for that. She said wait the bidding wars were coming. No I did not think anyone would pay $60.00 yet more. The auction ended at midnight and my final price was $132.00! Now had I not checked Ebay I might have sold it for $10.00.
